Giving birth to a child in the comfort of my own home? Isn't that a bit archaic?
Not really.
Home births are not a thing of the past. They are a very feasible, and not to mention–comfortable, way to bring your precious little one into this world. I know what most of you are thinking: Isn't it risky? Unsafe? An accident waiting to happen? My partner would never jibe with the idea!
Well, may I direct you to the following BBC article that was published this past week:Home Births' as Safe as Hospital.
The large clinical study noted in the article tracked over a half million births and found ZERO difference in death rates in either mothers or babies when babies were delivered in the comfort of ones' home versus the hospital.
Archaic? I think not!
I have had plenty patients choose a home birth over a hopsital birth and all went beautifully and both mom and baby are healthy. Sure, as with birthing in a hospital, problems may arise, but as long as you are working with an experienced, knowledgeable and gutsy midwife and the birth mother is considered “low risk” there shouldn't be anything to worry about.
If you're still feeling squeemish about the idea of giving birth to your bambino at home, check out the documentary: The Business of Being Born.
Irregardless of your birthing choice– if you are planning on having a child at some point in your life, this film is a must see. It will completely, totally, without a doubt change the way you view the birthing process in America.
