When I first began working with Diane, she was 40 years old.  She contacted me after reading my  book, Yes, You Can Get Pregnant.  At our first visit she said to me, “I just want to know if you think there’s even a remote possibility that I can get pregnant with my own eggs.”  She and her husband weren’t at all open to the idea of doing any assisted reproductive techniques, such as IUI or IVF, so getting pregnant naturally was the only option. She had seen a few fertility specialists and based on her age and her high FSH number, all of them said the same thing: you’re too old, your eggs are poor quality, you can only get pregnant using a donor egg and IVF.  

She was devastated and angry.  But seeing me brought her hope, especially since I was currently pregnant at the age of 40 when she first met me.  She was overjoyed that I was her same age and that I got pregnant naturally after following my own advice.  With that, Diane dove right into my entire program.  She followed everything I told her from diet to lifestyle and most importantly, she was diligent about the emotional work.  As we worked together a lot of her past traumas and fears surfaced– everything from her poor relationship with her mom to previous gynecological traumas to worries about her age and having a child with learning disabilities. It all came up and with her honest and open heart, we worked through it.  She really owned her process.  

As we worked together, time kept passing and although her periods had become healthier, she was still having shorter cycles and sometimes she wouldn’t even ovulate.  She continued to get frustrated. She even began to isolate herself from friends who were becoming pushy about her need to do IVF.  She even pulled away from me at one point, saying she just needed a break from it all.  I completely understood and gave her space as she had been following my program for almost 18 months and had yet to fall pregnant.  As she was nearing her 42nd birthday she emailed me saying, “I have completely let go of the oars. I don’t think this baby thing is in the cards for us. My period is still irregular and I don’t think I’m ovulating anymore. I am sad but trying to focus on all the good in my life. There is so much to be grateful for.”  I wrote her back with love and compassion.  The following week she wrote me, “I am writing you this in utter shock. I am eight weeks pregnant– I found out a week ago. I thought I was going through perimenopause as I had NO SYMPTOMS.”  

As you can imagine, she was in shock and as equally scared as she was elated.  At the age of 42, Diane had gotten pregnant naturally.  She is now almost 30 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby (as determined by many genetic tests), and now I get to talk with her about all things baby registry and breastfeeding.  Although it took Diane nearly two years to conceive on my program, she stayed committed and she got pregnant naturally!
