How Belief in Your Body Can Help You Get Pregnant

Welcome to Stories of Hope: True tales of life, love, and perseverance from the Yes, You Can Get Pregnant community. Because we’re on the fertility journey together.

When I first spoke with Donna and her husband, they shared that they had been through two miscarriages and had worked with every kind of doctor you could imagine. Donna had thyroid issues and had tried to naturally heal and improve her fertility via gut cleanses, salt baths, hypnotherapy, essential oils, naturopathy, acupuncture, and chinese herbs. But Donna still couldn’t get or stay pregnant. They were deeply hurting and wanting answers.

Donna had enrolled in my Yes, You Can Get Pregnant ecourse and was eager for more guidance on what she could do to optimize her fertility. After our first fertility coaching session, I expressed to Donna that she was doing SO MUCH GOOD for her body… and now it was time to process some of the emotions that she was feeling and begin to get the faith back in her body.

After doing my detailed health history on her, I really felt like she was getting all the right support, was following an optimal diet and taking all the important supplements for her health and fertility. But, she was missing something that can’t be fixed with a pill or a dietary change– belief in her body. I definitely believed her body could get and stay pregnant, but she didn’t.

Between her two back-to-back miscarriages and her thyroid challenges, most of her western doctors told her she needed IVF and would likely need donor eggs, even though she was only 32. As a result, she had zero belief in her body. In fact, as we spoke more I realized she didn't just lack faith in her body, she hated her body for what it had done to her.

She was broken, she was ashamed, she was paranoid, she was angry, she was so incredibly traumatized. Those two miscarriages made her question her worthiness and purpose on every level. She was also doing something that so many do, she was taking advice from too many people. She had a naturopath, an acupuncturist, an herbalist, an endocrinologist, a fertility doctor, a psychic and a few more.

Being true to the kind of doctor I am, I supported all she was doing but urged her to minimize everything from her practitioners to her supplements. I just wanted her to simplify things and get back to believing in her body, not just because she was on about 20 different supplements (no joke!), but because she was completely overwhelmed by all the things she was told she had to do for her fertility. My ultimate plan for her included some supplement and diet shifts and some more tests by her doctor, but ultimately was about getting back to the basics and shifting her mindset.

Donna was pretty resistant at first. She wanted solid recommendations from me. She wanted a clear and concise ‘to do’ list. While giving her guidance on what to do, I also talked to her about surrender. I gave her tools to release shame. I worked with her on her negative body talk. I encouraged her to have fun sex again with her husband, no matter what time of the month. I coached her back into being herself. In this fertility process, she had lost herself.

After six months, she had devoured my Yes, You Can Get Pregnant ecourse and had several coaching sessions and email exchanges with me and she was truly shifting. She wrote me, “I just wanted to share all of this with you because I feel that you are the only one that knows everything that we have been doing. No one on our specialist team knows about everything that I have been doing because I have just been taking bits and pieces from them and trying to make it work for us which has been a little challenging at times… I am so grateful that our paths crossed and that you created your amazing program! I feel like I am finally being nice to myself again. Thank you!! You have really helped me put the pieces together. PLUS you have taught me to like myself and my body again! Thank you!”

And, then just eight months after she began her work with me, she messaged to say,
“I received some very unexpected news yesterday that I wanted to share with you. I am in complete shock and have not been able to process this at all. Yesterday I went to the fertility clinic to start my 3rd month of tracking and after some tests they told me that I am…..Pregnant!?! 4 weeks and 6 days today. I am in complete shock and I told them they had it wrong and it was not possible as I had a pretty heavy period, fresh red blood but my HCG is 600+, Progesterone 93. WHAT???!!!! I got home and did a pregnancy test and it said 2-3 weeks since conception which is about right. Tell me what to do!!??”

I wrote back, “Enjoy. Keep the faith. Keep doing what you’re doing. TRUST what you’re doing. Talk to that baby. Thank it for coming. Relax. Laugh. Cherish.”

Donna is currently 22 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby. They are both thriving. Donna continues to appreciate and trust in her fertile body, every day.
