One of the most important topics I discuss in my best-selling fertility book, Yes, You Can Get Pregnant and with my fertility clients is environmental toxins. Whether you realize it or not, the products you use, the food you eat, and even the air you breathe can impact your hormones, your egg and sperm quality, and ultimately, your fertility.
I know it can feel overwhelming—modern life is full of chemicals! But here’s the good news: once you know where toxins hide, you can make simple swaps that dramatically reduce your toxic load and support your reproductive health.
How Environmental Toxins Impact Fertility
Hormone Disruptors
Chemicals like BPA and phthalates are endocrine disruptors. They interfere with hormone signaling, which can throw off ovulation, sperm production, thyroid health, and menstrual cycles.
Egg & Sperm Quality
Heavy metals such as mercury and lead, as well as pesticides, have been linked to poor egg and sperm health—making conception more difficult.
Increased Risk of Miscarriage
Research shows that high exposure to air pollution, toxic cleaners, and certain industrial chemicals can increase the risk of miscarriage.
Delayed Conception
Chronic toxin exposure can affect reproductive function, slowing your ability to conceive and potentially increasing the time to pregnancy.
Where Are These Toxins Hiding?
- Plastics – Think water bottles, food storage containers, and even cash register receipts (BPA & phthalates).
- Pesticides – Found on conventionally grown produce, grains, and meats.
- Household Cleaners – Harsh chemicals in sprays, detergents, and air fresheners.
- Personal Care Products – Parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances in shampoos, lotions, and makeup.
- Air & Water – Vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and contaminated tap water.
Simple Ways to Reduce Toxin Exposure
- Choose organic produce and hormone-free meats whenever possible.
- Switch to glass or stainless steel for food storage and water bottles.
- Use non-toxic skincare and beauty products (your skin is your largest organ!). My line, Aimee Raupp Beauty, was created to be all-organic, fertility-friendly, and hormone-harmony–promoting—making it a safe and effective alternative to conventional products.
- Filter your water with a high-quality water filter. Aquabliss is my favorite and you can get 5% off when you use my code: AIMEERAUPP here.
- Improve indoor air with air purifiers and houseplants. (I personally love HypoAir.)
- Swap out harsh cleaners for eco-friendly or DIY options (vinegar and baking soda work wonders). Here’s a list of my recommended household products.
- Protect yourself at work if you’re around chemicals—gloves, masks, ventilation matter.
Supporting Detoxification for Fertility
It’s not just about reducing exposure—it’s also about supporting your body’s natural detox pathways:
- Eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale to help your liver process excess hormones and toxins. For a deeper dive into how food can support fertility, see my book The Egg Quality Diet.
- Stay hydrated with clean, filtered water.
- Move your body daily—sweating through walking, yoga, or light exercise is one of the best detox tools we have.
- Manage stress with meditation, breathwork, or acupuncture. (I talk extensively about the mind-body connection in my book Body Belief.)
My Final Thoughts
You can’t avoid toxins completely—and that’s okay. What matters is lowering your overall exposure so your body has the energy, balance, and resilience it needs to thrive. Every intentional choice—whether it’s choosing organic strawberries, switching to Aimee Raupp Beauty skincare, or drinking from stainless steel—moves you closer to creating the healthiest environment for conception.
And remember: you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be intentional. With love,
Aimee
