When women come to me worried about their hormones, they are often holding a single lab value and a lot of fear. I want to offer something more useful: a real understanding of how your hormones work together, and what you can actually do when they are out of balance.
The Hormones That Drive Conception
FSH, or follicle-stimulating hormone, is released by the pituitary to signal the ovaries to mature follicles. LH triggers ovulation when a follicle is ready. Estrogen builds the uterine lining and signals follicle maturity. Progesterone supports the uterine lining after ovulation and sustains early pregnancy. No single hormone works alone. They function as a cascade, each one triggering the next. If you want a deep understanding of how these hormones interact and what disrupts them, my Fertility Hormones 101 Masterclass was built for exactly this.
Two Rules That Govern Everything
In my practice, two clinical principles guide every hormonal conversation. First: heal the gut, heal the hormones. The gut is where estrogen is metabolized, where nutrients are absorbed, and where immune signals originate. Poor gut function leads to hormonal imbalance almost predictably. Second: regulate the nervous system, regulate the hormones. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which suppresses GnRH, the hormone that drives the entire reproductive cascade. You cannot consistently ovulate well in a body that is locked in survival mode.
What You Can Change Starting Now
Remove environmental estrogens from your daily life: plastic food containers, synthetic fragrances, pesticide-heavy produce, and conventional personal care products. For cleaner alternatives that are specifically formulated without hormone-disrupting ingredients, my Aimee Raupp Beauty line is a simple place to start. Support blood sugar stability by eating protein, fat, and fiber at every meal. Add foundational supplements: omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, magnesium, and B vitamins. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep and spend time outside daily.
My free guide Living In Harmony is a helpful starting point for understanding how to support your hormones through your daily rhythms and cycle phases. For the full clinical picture, including the specific dietary and supplement protocols I use with clients, my book Yes, You Can Get Pregnant lays it all out. And if you want to work through it with personalized support, my team’s fertility coaching program is here for you.
